Counseling

& Individual Directed Retreats

Spiritual Direction is the traditional name for a type of counseling with special reference to the experience of the divine of the individual.

Individual Directed Retreats represent a way to quiet the body and the mind in a serene and spiritual environment.

Spiritual Direction is a sacred bond between two people, and needs to be established carefully. It is an intentional and deliberate deep encounter. The person who asks for the meeting desires to be helped to investigate certain aspects of his/her soul experience; the "spiritual director" agrees to help through deep listening. This has nothing to do with the so-called "Bible-based counseling" which treats the Bible as a book of moral rules and tends to impose behaviors on those who access counseling. On the contrary, it is an exercise of quiet and deep listening through which the person reaches clarification with regard to his/her spiritual life. Professional psychological counseling may or may not be pursued alongside, as appropriate.

You can contact with Fr. Gianluigi for a first meeting, in which you will find out more in detail how spiritual direction works. He will also be able to refer you to trained and experienced spiritual directors besides himself. Write to Fr. Gianluigi: priest.christchurchont@gmail.com

Individual Directed Retreats, usually lasting one full day, represent a way to quiet the body and the mind in a serene and spiritual environment, while availing oneself of a spiritual guide at specified times of the day. This can be a one-time experience or it may be repeated. Usually a Directed Retreat starts at 9:00 am and ends in the afternoon at an agreed upon time, but always by 5:00 pm. Our grounds include a cloister-garden, library, small chapel, and the main church sanctuary, all available to the retreatant. The retreatant meets with the guide at 9:00 am and again at the end of the day; a brief midday check-in is available upon request. Most of the retreat is spent in silence: contemplating, reading, journaling, meditating, praying, or other spiritual practices.
